🌳 Tell the Trees Who Hurt You…

Old Magic Still Works

Whisper your troubles to the trees, let the wind carry your worries and trust Mother Earth to take care of the rest.

Tell the trees who hurt you. Tell the trees your problems. Tell them about the people who broke your heart, betrayed your trust, drained your energy or left you questioning everything you thought you knew about them. Tell them the things you've kept to yourself because you're tired of explaining how you feel to people who either don't understand or, quite frankly, couldn't care less.

Trees don't gossip. They don't interrupt. They don't judge you, twist your words or repeat your private conversations to half the neighbourhood. They don't tell you you're being too sensitive, that you should have moved on by now or that perhaps you misunderstood somebody's behaviour. Trees have far better manners than a surprising number of humans I've encountered.

They simply listen.

And then, according to the beautiful old magic of Mother Earth, they whisper your troubles to the wind, bury your worries deep amongst their roots and let the earth decide what to do with it all.

Old magic still works. Some of us never stopped believing in it.

I've always loved nature, and there's something about being surrounded by trees that makes me feel connected to something far greater than the everyday nonsense we seem to spend our lives dealing with. I love the smell of the earth, the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze and the feeling of standing beneath a beautiful old tree that's probably witnessed more history than any of us could begin to imagine. There's a peace amongst trees that I struggle to find anywhere else, and I've never believed that their beauty is simply something we're supposed to look at and admire.

To me, nature is alive with energy. Every tree, every crystal, every river and every patch of earth belongs to something wonderfully connected. Our ancestors understood the importance of that connection long before we became obsessed with technology, notifications and the apparent need to document every waking moment of our lives. Somewhere along the way, we've become so busy looking at screens that we've forgotten to look up at the trees.

Trees have held sacred meaning throughout ancient spiritual traditions, representing wisdom, protection, strength and the connection between the heavens and Mother Earth. Their roots stretch deep into the ground while their branches reach towards the sky, creating what I see as a beautiful natural reflection of our own energy centres. The Root Chakra connects us with grounding, security and stability, while the Crown Chakra represents our spiritual connection with something greater than ourselves. A tree stands between the two, firmly rooted yet always reaching upwards, weathering whatever life throws at it without forgetting where it belongs.

I find that rather comforting, especially when life has been anything but kind to me over the last two years.

One of my favourite ways to deepen this connection is through crystals. I've always believed that crystals and nature belong together, and there are three particular stones I love for a ritual of emotional release, grounding and renewal.

Black Tourmaline is my choice when I want to work with protection and the transmutation of negative energy. This beautiful, dark crystal is traditionally associated with the Root Chakra and is used in spiritual practices to absorb and transform unwanted energy. I love the idea of holding Black Tourmaline against the bark of an old tree while speaking about whatever has been weighing heavily on my heart. I visualise that emotional heaviness travelling through the crystal, down through the tree's roots and deep into Mother Earth, where it can be transformed rather than carried around indefinitely.

After all, some people have already taken up quite enough of my time and energy without being allowed to occupy my thoughts rent-free for the foreseeable future.

Tree Agate and Moss Agate are equally beautiful companions for woodland rituals. Their intricate green markings resemble branches, roots and tiny forests, almost as though Mother Nature has tucked a little piece of herself inside each stone. Both are traditionally associated with grounding, growth and our connection to the natural world. I particularly love Moss Agate for its symbolism of renewal and fresh beginnings, while Tree Agate brings that wonderful sense of stability and belonging. Holding either crystal whilst resting against a tree feels like bringing two parts of the same natural energy together.

Then there's Green Aventurine, one of my favourite Heart Chakra crystals and a beautiful stone for emotional renewal, self-love and personal growth. Once you've released the energy of past experiences, it's important to welcome something positive into the space you've created. Green Aventurine is traditionally known as the Stone of Opportunity, and I associate it with opening the heart to happiness, healthier relationships and the possibility of a fresh start. There's something wonderfully reassuring about its gentle green colouring, reminding me of spring arriving after a long, miserable winter.

And that brings me to a little woodland ritual I absolutely love.

🌲 The Root & Release Ritual

Find yourself a tree that you feel naturally drawn towards. It doesn't have to be the oldest oak in the forest or somewhere that looks as though fairies might appear at any moment, although I certainly wouldn't complain if they did. A tree in your garden, a quiet woodland or somewhere you enjoy walking is absolutely perfect. Approach it gently, take a moment to appreciate its presence and, if it feels right, ask permission to share your troubles.

Hold your chosen crystal in your hand or rest it gently against the bark. Close your eyes, take a few slow breaths and imagine the tree's roots stretching deep beneath your feet, connecting with the steady, grounding energy of Mother Earth. Visualise yourself becoming part of that connection, allowing your thoughts to settle and your breathing to slow.

Then tell the tree everything.

Tell it who hurt you, what happened, what you're frightened of and what you're struggling to release. Speak aloud, whisper or simply allow the words to form in your mind. There's no need to make your story sound polite or acceptable, and you certainly don't have to defend your feelings. The tree isn't going to interrupt halfway through with its own version of events.

As you speak, imagine the heaviness gradually leaving your body, travelling through your crystal and down into the tree's roots. Visualise Mother Earth receiving that energy, taking what no longer belongs to you and transforming it into something that can nourish new growth.

When you've said everything you need to say, lift your face towards the branches and listen to the leaves moving in the breeze. Imagine the tree whispering your words to the wind, allowing them to drift away rather than remaining trapped inside you.

Take three deep breaths, thank the tree for its presence and collect your crystal. Leave the roots and surrounding earth undisturbed, and walk away without looking back to seal the release.

Not because your past has suddenly disappeared, but because you've made a conscious spiritual decision to stop carrying every piece of it into your future.

Four stages of a spiritual tree healing ritual: holding a Moss Agate crystal, connecting with tree roots, releasing emotions beside a tree and walking through a peaceful sunlit forest.

🌳 The Root & Release Ritual — Connect with Mother Earth, ground yourself with crystal energy, whisper your troubles to the trees and let the wind carry away what no longer serves you. Old magic still works. 💚✨

💚 Mother Earth Has Always Known

I think one of the most beautiful things about nature is that it never pretends life is perfect. Trees lose their leaves, branches break, storms arrive and entire landscapes change with the seasons. Yet beneath the surface, life continues. Roots grow deeper, new shoots emerge and what once appeared broken becomes part of something new.

There's a lesson in that which I believe we could all benefit from remembering.

We don't have to hold on to every painful experience simply because it happened to us. We can acknowledge the hurt, recognise what it taught us and decide that we're ready to grow beyond it. Spiritual healing isn't always about adding more to our lives. There are moments when the most powerful thing we can do is release something we've been carrying for far too long.

And perhaps, just perhaps, the next time you feel overwhelmed by people, problems or the general chaos of life, you might find yourself standing beneath a tree, crystal in hand, having a little conversation with Mother Earth.

I can think of far worse company.

Tell the trees who hurt you. Tell them your troubles. Let them whisper your words to the wind, bury your worries amongst their roots and allow Mother Earth to decide what to do with it all. (@thatapothecarywitch)

Because old magic still works, the earth is still listening, and even the strongest trees have survived a few storms. 🌳💚✨

With love, light and a little woodland magic,
